Wisdom Teeth Removal in Gangnam Seoul

Pain, swelling or food stuck at the back of your mouth? We check your wisdom teeth with X-rays or a 3D CT scan and explain in English whether they should come out.

In short: wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of the mouth. Only those that are impacted (stuck under gum or bone), repeatedly infected, decayed or damaging the next tooth usually need removing. Removal is done under local anaesthetic, and most people are back to normal within a few days.

Understanding wisdom teeth

Do wisdom teeth always need to come out?

No. A wisdom tooth that has come through straight, is healthy and can be cleaned can often stay. Problems start when there is not enough room for it.

A partly erupted tooth leaves a gap under the gum where food and bacteria collect, causing gum infection (pericoronitis), decay or damage to the molar in front.

Usually simpler

Erupted wisdom tooth

Fully through the gum, so often removed like a normal extraction.

  • Local anaesthetic
  • Usually a short procedure
  • Heals in a few days
Needs more planning

Impacted wisdom tooth

Trapped under gum or bone, often at an angle.

  • A small opening in the gum, sometimes some bone removed
  • Tooth may be removed in sections
  • Stitches and a follow-up check

When to see a dentist

Signs of a wisdom tooth problem

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
  • Swollen, sore gum behind the last molar
  • Bad taste or bad breath near the back teeth
  • Food trapped behind your molars
  • Difficulty opening your mouth

Before deciding

When keeping them may be fine

  • No pain, swelling or infection
  • No decay on it or the tooth in front
  • You can clean behind it easily
  • X-rays show no cyst or damage

After treatment

Recovering after wisdom tooth removal

Swelling usually peaks on day two or three, then settles.

  • Bite on the gauze as advised so a clot can form
  • No hard rinsing, spitting or straws on day one
  • Cold packs on the cheek for the first day
  • Soft, lukewarm food; chew on the other side
  • Do not smoke — it raises the risk of dry socket
  • Contact us if pain worsens after day three

Questions patients ask us

Wisdom teeth removal FAQ

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards are normal.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth extraction?
Most people return to work or study within one to three days. Swelling usually settles within a week.
Should I remove all four wisdom teeth at once?
It depends on which teeth cause problems and how they sit. Your dentist will explain whether one side at a time or several together suits you.
Can I fly after wisdom tooth removal?
Many people fly a few days after a simple extraction. After a surgical extraction we suggest waiting for your follow-up check.
Do you have English-speaking dentists?
Yes. Our dentists explain your diagnosis and options in English, and our English coordinator, Ms. Choi, has helped international patients at A Plus for over 15 years.
